China has built the world’s largest electric container ship, with a capacity of 742 TEU.

Chinese shipbuilding companies have unveiled the world’s largest container ship featuring a fully electric propulsion system. Designed to carry 742 TEU, the new vessel marks a significant step forward in the development of eco-friendly fleets for coastal shipping.

The container ship measures 127.8 meters in length and 21.6 meters in beam, with a design draft reaching 6.2 meters. The vessel’s cargo capacity is estimated at approximately 9,600 tons, making it highly efficient for use on regional routes characterized by high-density container traffic.

The vessel’s design was developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute, while its electric propulsion system was created by the Shanghai Marine Equipment Research Institute. The container ship is also equipped with an intelligent control system and is slated for operation on the Ningbo–Zhapu coastal route in China’s eastern province of Zhejiang.
