DP World has launched a carbon credit scheme at the Port of Southampton, allowing customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions through terminal operations.

DP World announced the launch of a new carbon inset certificate scheme at its container terminal at the Port of Southampton. For the first time, this allows customers to count emissions reductions achieved at the port toward their supply chain decarbonization goals. Certificates are generated by reducing emissions through the use of HVO biofuels, electrifying port infrastructure, and generating renewable electricity, delivering significant CO₂ savings.

The new Container Terminal Inset Certificates are part of the DP World Carbon Inset Programme and will be automatically applied to eligible cargo passing through the terminal from 1 April 2026. Each shipment is allocated 250 kg of CO₂e, and customers receive independently verified documents for their sustainability reporting. The program is implemented in partnership with the 123Carbon platform and with the participation of Bureau Veritas.

Launched in January 2025, the program has already covered over 250,000 TEUs and issued certificates equivalent to a reduction of over 9,000 tonnes of CO₂e. Initially scheduled for 12 months, it has been extended until the end of 2026 and is funded by the Energy Transition Contribution, which applies to all imported containers passing through DP World ports in the UK. Based in Dubai and operating in more than 75 countries, DP World accounts for over 9% of global container throughput and makes ports a key element of low-carbon logistics across sea, rail, and road.
