DP World Dar Es Salaam has achieved record vessel handling figures and significantly boosted the operational efficiency of the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Since commencing terminal operations in April 2024, the company has undertaken extensive infrastructure upgrades, reducing the discharge time for comparable cargoes by over 90% – from more than 300 hours to under 28 hours.
Under a 30-year concession, DP World continues to invest in port development and the implementation of modern logistics solutions. A key development has been the shift to Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) operations, including the handling of specialized Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs). This has enabled the port to accommodate larger, more complex vessels, lower logistics costs, and enhance the competitiveness of the East African trade route. In the first quarter, the port set a new record by receiving the M/V RAMHAN – a 240-meter vessel and the largest ever to call at Dar es Salaam. With a capacity of up to 7,790 vehicles, the ship discharged 779 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs) – predominantly heavy machinery – in just 27 hours.
Martin Jacob, CEO of DP World in Tanzania, noted that the port’s modernization strengthens Tanzania’s position as a regional trade hub and unlocks new business opportunities. The company is also continuing to develop the terminal’s workforce; today, the port employs over 2,900 Tanzanian nationals who undergo international certification and specialized training in operations and safety. Working alongside the Tanzania Ports Authority, DP World continues to expand Dar es Salaam’s capabilities, reduce trade barriers, and support the region’s integration into global supply chains.
