HHLA TK Estonia introduces the first fully electric RTG cranes in Europe.

The HHLA TK Estonia terminal in Muuga will be the first in Europe to use fully battery-powered Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes, capable of operating an entire shift on battery power alone. The cranes, delivered by Konecranes, will arrive at the end of the year and will form part of the terminal’s strategy for sustainable development, emission reduction, and modernization of its container yard infrastructure.

Each crane is equipped with a 296 kWh battery, providing up to eight hours of autonomous operation. The new RTGs will modernize the terminal’s equipment fleet, improve environmental performance, and maintain operational stability at the terminal, which already uses equipment from the same manufacturer. According to HHLA TK Estonia’s management, this is an important step in implementing a long-term sustainability program and transitioning to electric solutions in European ports.

Konecranes representatives note that collaborating with a partner in a neighboring region allows for the rapid implementation of innovations in real-world operations. The new cranes reduce noise and emissions, improve terminal resilience and demonstrate that battery technology is now ready to handle full operational loads at European container terminals.
