Masdar collaborates on green hydrogen supply chain study with Port of Amsterdam and industry partners

On Thursday 7 December, Masdar, a prominent global clean energy company, has joined forces with the Port of Amsterdam, SkyNRG, and Zenith Energy Terminals to embark on a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) aimed at assessing the feasibility of a dedicated liquefied green hydrogen supply chain. This collaboration follows an earlier Memorandum of Understanding signed between Masdar and four Dutch companies. The focus of the JSA is to explore the potential of producing green hydrogen by Masdar and exporting it to the port of Amsterdam, thereby supplying hydrogen to regional industries and the broader European hinterland.

Hydrogen serves as a versatile energy carrier with numerous applications, especially in the industrial and transportation sectors. Port of Amsterdam is strategically developing an industry cluster around green hydrogen within its port, including potential applications like Sustainable Aviation Fuel production. As part of this agreement, the partners will investigate a liquefied green hydrogen supply chain, aligning with Masdar’s goal to achieve 100 GW of renewable energy capacity and produce 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The port, being Europe’s fourth-largest and a key gateway, envisions itself as a prime destination for Masdar’s green hydrogen.

Zenith Energy Terminals, the operator of a prominent energy storage and distribution facility in the port of Amsterdam, is actively involved in developing an open access liquid hydrogen import facility, facilitating the importation, storage, distribution, and regasification of liquid hydrogen. With these combined capabilities, the partners aim to establish an end-to-end supply chain for liquefied hydrogen, providing a concrete opportunity to ship green hydrogen from Masdar’s production facilities and convert it to e-SAF by SkyNRG in the port of Amsterdam. The JSA was signed in the presence of the Dutch Ambassador to the UAE, Mr. Gerard Steeghs, underscoring the commitment to advancing green hydrogen initiatives.
