MODAL GROUP highlighted the key role of rail freight transport for France.

In a statement, MODAL GROUP emphasized the strategic importance of developing rail freight transport amidst the challenges facing multimodal infrastructure. The company highlighted the need to rapidly shift freight flows from road transport to more eco-friendly and efficient solutions, outlining four priority areas to achieve these goals and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

France plans to increase the share of rail freight transport to 18% by 2030. This measure is part of the national strategy to electrify the economy and reduce fossil fuel consumption. MODAL GROUP underscored that rail transport – which relies heavily on electricity – plays a vital role in ensuring the country’s energy sovereignty.

At the same time, the company points to a shortage of multimodal terminals, a factor that is hindering industry growth and impeding the shift of freight to rail. MODAL GROUP estimates that without accelerated investment and the implementation of infrastructure projects, French ports risk losing ground to Northern European competitors that are already integrated into key European transport corridors. To meet these objectives, the company proposes four priorities: implementing a freight transport investment program; designating multimodal terminals as strategic infrastructure supported by ports; integrating these terminals with rail and waterway corridors; and attracting private financing.
