The Polish rail intermodal transport market has doubled over the past decade.

The volume of intermodal rail freight in Poland has doubled over the past decade, underscoring the sector’s steady growth. While a slowdown occurred in 2022–2023, the market rebounded in 2024, surpassing the 2021 record by 4%.

Transport volumes continued to rise in 2025, increasing by another 3% and reflecting sustained high demand for container logistics. At the same time, the share of transit traffic on the Asia–Europe route fell to 11%. For comparison, this route accounted for an average of 14% of total container traffic on the Polish rail network between 2017 and 2022, peaking at 17% during the pandemic years of 2020–2021.

Transit volumes dropped significantly after 2022 but subsequently began a rapid recovery driven by renewed demand for transport between Asia and Europe. Experts note that Poland’s railway infrastructure continues to play a vital role in facilitating freight flows between the two regions.
