The first export train from Azerbaijan to China departed along the Middle Corridor.

On November 24, Azerbaijan and China celebrated a historic moment: for the first time, an export cargo was sent from Baku to China by rail. This event marks a new stage in the development of economic and transport ties between the countries, emphasizing the strategic importance of Azerbaijan in international transportation. In addition to the transit and import of goods from China through the Middle Corridor, sending export cargo from Azerbaijan to China significantly increases the efficiency of this route. The rapid development of the Middle Corridor contributes to the increase in cargo transportation volumes both to the east and to the west.

An updated plan for Rail Baltica has been approved in southern Estonia.

In Estonia, work continues to refine the route of Rail Baltica, the largest railway project in the region. Last week, the public discussion stage of the updated plan for the section in the south of Pärnu County ended. Meetings with local residents were held in Uulu, Kilingi-Nõmme and Pärnu. Although there was less interest from citizens, experts believe that this is due to the fact that most questions had already been answered in previous stages.

A liquefied methane terminal will be built in the port of Muuga.

The Port of Tallinn and JetGas have signed an agreement to establish a liquefied methane terminal in the Port of Muuga. The project involves the staged construction of five methane storage tanks and a connecting pipeline to the berth. The first stage, including the construction of one tank, is planned to be completed by the end of 2027, and the entire complex no later than 2030.

The Port of Hamburg maintains stable container turnover despite economic challenges.

In the first nine months of 2024, the container throughput of the Port of Hamburg amounted to 5.8 million TEU, which is almost the same as last year. An increase of 0.2% was recorded in the loaded container segment (5.1 million TEU), but the handling of empty containers decreased by 4.6% to 722 thousand TEU. In the general cargo segment, an increase of 3.7% was recorded, reaching 904 thousand tons. At the same time, the volume of bulk cargo transshipment decreased by 9.3%, amounting to 24.9 million tons, which is due, in particular, to a reduction in coal transshipment after the closure of power plants.

Kazakhstan has begun a large-scale modernization of its transport infrastructure.

The development of the transport and logistics industry was discussed at a meeting of the government of Kazakhstan. Vice Minister of Transport Maksat Kaliakparov reported that there are 13 international transport corridors in the country, and active work is underway to eliminate infrastructure constraints. Among the priorities are the development of new routes, digitalization of processes and increasing the capacity of key areas, such as the TITR and the North-South corridor, which will be able to handle up to 20 million tons of cargo by 2030.

Port of Rotterdam tests digital bunkering system.

The Port of Rotterdam, ZeroNorth and Vitol have completed their first digital bunker delivery, launching a four-week trial of the electronic Bunker Delivery Note (eBDN). As part of the project, Vitol will carry out three to four bunkerings using the ZeroNorth solution. The aim of the trial is to evaluate the benefits of the digital format, such as time savings, increased operational efficiency and improved data quality.

In Aktau, a meeting was held between the seaport management and the delegation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan, dedicated to the development of economic cooperation between the countries. The central topic of discussion was the initiative to create a trade and distribution center that will be able to promote Uzbek products on the Kazakhstan market and ensure the transshipment of goods to third countries.

HHLA demonstrates sustainable growth in financial performance for the first nine months of 2024.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) increased its revenue by 8.5% to €1,182.9 million in the first three quarters of 2024. Operating profit (EBIT) increased by 23.2% to €93.2 million, while net profit amounted to €23.1 million, almost double the previous year’s figure. The improved financial results were driven by increased transport volumes, higher container storage fees at the Port of Hamburg and the expansion of the European network.
