The volume of cargo transported by all modes of transport in Ukraine reached 104.4 million tons during the period from January to April 2026 – a 5% increase over the figure for the corresponding period of the previous year. These data were released by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.
In May 2026, a significant milestone in construction and engineering works was reached at the southern section of the new Riga Central Station: the phased activation of the facility’s permanent power supply system began. The transition to “Power On” mode signifies the decommissioning of temporary power sources and the commencement of operations for the permanent electrical infrastructure, thereby enabling the initiation of comprehensive testing and commissioning of the building’s internal systems. According to a representative of Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas – the national implementing body for the Rail Baltica project in Latvia – this phase transforms the site from a mere construction zone into a technically functional infrastructure, ready for further preparations regarding passenger services.
At the new Riga Central Station, one of the key stages of construction has been completed. Meanwhile, at the Port of Emmerich – operated by Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe – a multi-year project to modernize the container terminal has reached its conclusion. On May 11, 2026, the company officially commissioned a new container gantry crane, installed as part of an infrastructure renewal program. The project was funded by Port Emmerich – Infrastruktur- und Immobiliengesellschaft mbH, the entity that owns the port’s infrastructure.
In Astana, during the 18th annual meeting of the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission, a series of documents were signed aimed at fostering the development of international road transport, streamlining transit procedures, and digitizing transport processes along the Europe–Caucasus–Asia route. A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of the Agreement on the TRACECA Single Transit Permit (STP) – a document that member states had been working on for several years. The agreement was signed by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
In Kazakhstan, work continues on the new Moyinty–Kyzylzhar railway line project, which is set to become a vital link in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. Spanning over 300 kilometers, this main line will traverse the Karaganda and Ulytau regions, connecting the Moyinty and Kyzylzhar stations. Once commissioned, the new section will shorten freight transport routes by 149 kilometers, enhance the efficiency of containerized cargo shipments, and boost the country’s transit potential.
During a pre-planned 130-hour technical “window,” a concrete culvert was successfully installed beneath the railway tracks at the Maasvlakte site, marking a significant milestone in the realization of the new Maasvlakte Zuid Railway Yard project. The operation was executed through close collaboration between the clients – ProRail and the Port of Rotterdam Authority – and the contracting firms Swietelsky, Van der Linden Beton, Boskalis, De Koning, and CT De Boer. The engineering solution involved the pre-assembly of two tunnel tubes – constructed from precast concrete sections – within an excavation pit adjacent to the tracks, followed by their “pushing” beneath the railway embankment using a hydraulic jacking system.
Riga International Airport concluded 2025 with a net profit of €4.2 million – an increase of €0.8 million compared to the previous year. According to the company’s audited annual report, passenger traffic and flight volumes remained at 2024 levels: over the course of the year, the airport served 7.1 million passengers and handled approximately 63,000 flights. Meanwhile, the company’s revenue grew by 3.9% to reach €80.7 million, while its EBITDA increased by 19% to €13.3 million.
Kazakhstan participated in the official opening of the modernized Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway line, which serves as one of the key elements of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). At the ceremony, held on June 2 at the Akhalkalaki station in Georgia, the country was represented by Zhanbiek Taizhanov, Vice-Minister of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The upgraded line is designed to expand transport capabilities connecting Central Asia, the Caucasus, Turkey, and Europe.
Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have initiated a joint procurement process for regional trains intended for the future Rail Baltica railway line. Under a tender announced in March, plans call for the acquisition of up to 20 trainsets, which will operate within the Baltic states, making stops at regional stations. Lithuania intends to order eight trains, Estonia between five and seven, while Latvia is considering the purchase of up to five units of rolling stock.
The Port of Tallinn, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), and the organization Port of Hamburg Marketing have signed a Memorandum of Intent aimed at deepening cooperation between the ports of Estonia and Germany. The signing took place during a visit to Hamburg by Estonia’s Minister of Infrastructure, Kuldar Leis, whose delegation held talks with representatives from the port industry, the logistics sector, and city authorities. The new agreement provides for joint efforts regarding digitalization, sustainable development, the strengthening of supply chains, and the development of secure transport infrastructure within the Baltic region.
